Description

Teaches trainees to safely raise and lower both the front and rear ends of a belt loader’s boom. Through step-by-step guided instructions and animations, trainees learn boom function, the correct elevation sequence, and how to control the belt loader’s working height.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Introduction to belt elevation and the purpose of the boom’s front and rear ends
  2. 2Familiarization with the relevant part of the control panel, its four elevation buttons and the deadman switch
  3. 3Practice using the deadman switch in a two-button combination
  4. 4Raising and lowering the boom’s front and rear ends
  5. 5React to simulated safety hazards involving personnel near the belt

Skills Acquired

  • Operate boom elevation at the front and rear ends using the correct two-button method.
  • Execute smooth front- and rear-boom raising and lowering
  • Maintain active grip on the deadman switch to prevent unintended motion
  • React to on-ramp hazards and apply correct stop behavior
  • Gain confidence in controlled and safe boom operation

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee begins seated in the belt loader cabin, viewing a live camera feed of the belt loader
  • The relevant part of the control panel is briefly explained, showing the deadman switch and the four elevation buttons for raising and lowering the booms
  • The trainee practices raising and lowering the boom’s front side using the correct two-button combination.
  • The same procedure is then repeated for the boom’s rear end, allowing the trainee to experience slope adjustment.
  • While lowering the boom’s front side, a colleague walks beneath the belt. The trainee must stop the boom movement immediately to proceed; failure to do so results in severe injury to the colleague and triggers a rewind.
  • When raising again, a colleague sits on the belt. The trainee must recognize the danger and instruct his colleague to clear the area
  • The lesson concludes with the boom’s front and rear sides returned to their rest positions and confirmation that the trainee correctly used the controls and demonstrated safe behavior.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Trainee must release both buttons to stop immediately; failure triggers a injury animation and reset

Learning Outcome
