Description

This lesson tests pushback tractor driving proficiency through three maneuvers — a left curve, a right curve, and a dogleg — each completed with fully manual driving without assistance. Trainees demonstrate path accuracy, target positioning, and steering control across all three scenarios. The training reinforces precise vehicle control and awareness of towbar limits to prevent aircraft damage and equipment failure.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Introduction to the assessment format and the three manual driving scenarios
  2. 2All three scenarios passed with a minimum score of 85 per scenario

Skills Acquired

  • Execute pushback maneuvers independently
  • Maintain precise tractor steering to keep the towbar within safe operating angles throughout each maneuver
  • Position the aircraft accurately at the designated final location after each maneuver
  • Recognize towbar angle limits and jackknife risk to prevent aircraft damage and equipment failure

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee is presented with three driving scenarios to chose from: left curve, right curve, and dogleg.
  • Seated in the pushback tractor cabin, the trainee drives each maneuver in full manual mode, steering the tractor and towbar along the required route without assistance.
  • After each run, performance is scored on path following, target accuracy, and distance driven; a detailed score breakdown is available for review.
  • A minimum score of 85 per scenario is required; failed scenarios can be retried, and the exam is complete once all three are passed.
  • If the towbar enters the no tow zone at the nose gear, a jackknife occurs, or the tractor deviates far off course, the attempt is stopped and must be restarted.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Attempt stopped; reinforces that towbar angle to the aircraft must stay within safe limits to prevent structural damage

Learning Outcome

Attempt stopped; reinforces that safe towbar-to-tractor angle must be maintained to prevent equipment damage

Learning Outcome

Attempt stopped; reinforces that path accuracy and controlled steering are required throughout the maneuver
